The Usha Stud's Northern Dancer horse Razeen Climaxed a brilliant classic season when his Sunil Jhangiani - owned daughter Warsaw Pact just headed the Indian Derby and Invitation winner Southern Regent, also by Razeen, out of the Indian St Leger in Bombay on Sunday. Both the first two were bred at Ameeta Mehra's Usha nursery. The Shapoor Mistry - bred Diffident gelding Aperitivo finished third, and another son of Razeen, Formidable Force, was forth.

Razeen sires his forth Indian Derby winner

Ameeta Mehra's Northern Dancer horse Razeen added another Indian Derby to his record when his son Southern Regent, who had looked a bit unlucky not to win the 2,000 Guineas, stayed on strongly to win this year's version of the race by three lengths from the Al Nasr Alwasheek filly Farida Kahloo and Stormtrooper's son Flavius Victor. The Latter pair carried the Dhunjibhoy colours.

The 1,000 Gns and Oaks winner Venus Arising, bred like Southern Regent at the Mehra-owned Usha Stud, got a poor ride on this occasion and was a fast finishing fifth. The winner is trained by Bangalore-based Ganapathy for India's biggest owner M A M Ramaswamy.

Southern Regent's dam Allinda is by the Vaguley Noble horse Treasure Leaf, who comes from Glint of Gold's family, and out of the Habitat mare Lady Harriet, who was closely related to Montiverdi and is dam of an Indian Derby, Enrico, herself.

China visit to stand in India

The talented Red Ransom horse China Visit, brilliant winner of the UAE Derby and a warm favourite for the 2,000 Guineas before being diverted to the longer Kentucky Derby over a trip he didn't stay, is to stand at the Usha Stud in northern India next year. One of the best racehorses to go to the subcontinent and from the family of this year's successful first crop sire King of Kings, he will join one of the country's most successful stallions over the past decade, the Northern Dancer horse Razeen at the Ameeta Mehra-owned stud.
