China Visit breaks the jinx

China Visit breaks the jinx could well be the catch line for the promoters of Usha Stud Farm after their resident stallion produced his first Derby winner through Moonlight Romance. The three year old filly, out of a Derby winning mare Wandering Star, won the Gr 1 Kingfisher Bangalore Derby, the most prestigious race of the Bangalore Racing Calendar last Sunday in the hands of champion jockey Richard Hughes.

The son of Red Ransom, China Visit was inducted as a sire in the high profile Usha Stud Farm several years ago. The stud farm always stood top notch stallions like Grey Gaston, Common Land, Razeen and Steinbeck which hold a permanent place when the history of Indian racing season for the number of classic winners they have sired. Razeen can even be termed as the best Indian stallion ever for the sheer of classic winners he has produced year after year and also for turning out to be a broodmare sire who has put his stamp through his daughters who have foaled Derby winners. Wandering Star who herself won the Gr 1 Deccan Derby is the dam of Moonlight Romance and she is the daughter of Razeen. Two years ago, another daughter of Razeen, Set Alight caught the imagination of race goers by her extraordinary performance. Set Alight is now covered by Burden of Proof and is due to foal sometime next year.

China Visit [USA] (dk b/br 1997, Red Ransom/Furajet by The Minstrel)

When China Visit came to India there was great deal of expectations especially since he was standing at Usha Stud Farm which had produced classic winners by the dozen and the stud farm had been winning the stud farm of the year award with amazing consistency. However, China Visit did not fire immediately and just as his sponsors were beginning to feel let down, he has produced a Derby winner and promises to keep the momentum going. Top sprinter Kiara was also by China Visit. Ruby Queen who won the Golconda 1000 Guineas and Golconda Oaks was another daughter of China Visit. Incidentally, the daughters of China Visit seem to be outperforming the sons of the stallion. Apart from Moonlight Romance, the third placed Xisca too was by China Visit. Violetta who has four races in a row at Mumbai is another China Visit progeny.

China Visit has proved to be a late bloomer. Just when the stud farm was reducing the number of mares covered by him, China Visit has struck it rich. Ameeta Mehra who was always enthusiastic about China Visit, feels that the victory of Moonlight Romance may be the first of the several highs for the stallion.

The Usha Stud Farm has recently imported the son of Danehill, Multidimensional as their new stallion. The first crop of Multidimensional is already on ground and a glimpse of his first crop can be had on the stud farm`s favourite namely www.ushastudfarm.com

Excentrique, the dam of Wandering Star was incidentally the first of the purchases that Ameeta made on her own at New Market when her father, the late Maj P K Mehra sent her to select some mares. Excentrique, who was owned by Narchos, has bred many a classic winner including Gr 1 Bangalore Winter Derby winner Star of Windsor.
