Speaking of Which Arrives in India
-by Major Srinivas Nargolkar (Retd.)

Speaking of Which (b/br 2009 Invincible Spirit - Suitably Discreet by Mr. Prospector) landed at Palam Airport on a cold evening on 23 December 2014 and had moved into his stall at the quarantine station a little before midnight. He is Usha Stud's new stallion and will be joining Multidimensional, China Visit and the retired veteran Steinbeck at Carterpuri after his quarantine period is over and will start covering from 15 February when the new season begins.

Speaking of Which was bred by Moyglare Stud at Maynooth, Co. Kildare. Moyglare was established in 1962 by the Swiss automobile and computer multi-millionnaire Walter Haefner and is a leading Irish nursery that has produced winners of such races as the Prix du Jockey Club (Bikala and Assert), Belmont Stakes (Go and Go), Stannera (Japan Cup), Media Puzzle (Melbourne Cup), Refuse To Bend (Two Thousand Guineas), Trusted Partner (Irish 1000 Guineas), Dance Design (Irish Oaks), to name just a few.

Moyglare decided to retain Speaking of Which for racing and sent him to Dermot Weld's yard at Rosewell House near Curragh. No trainer has sent out as many winners as Weld in the entire racing history of Ireland and he has been a Champion Trainer 21 times. Speaking of Which did not race at 2. After an educational run in March as a 3YO, the colt won his maiden at Cork and followed it up with an eye-catching nine length victory in the Gallinule Stakes, Gr.3 over 2000 m. at Curragh. Just a few days after that win, his owner Walter Haefner passed away at the age of 101. Speaking of Which ran just once more in Ireland when he was third in Kilternan Stakes, Gr.3 at Leopardstown where he was taking on older horses. He was then sent to U.S.A. and was beaten by just half a length in Twilight Derby, Gr.2 at Santa Anita and raced once more at Hollywood Park. He was saddled by Weld in all his six starts and ridden by the trainer's son-in-law Pat Smullen.

Having taken the decision to continue his racing in U.S.A., the owners handed Speaking of Which to the care of the trainer Christophe Clement. From sunny California, Speaking of Which moved to equally balmy Florida to Clement's establishment at Payson Park, Indiantown. There he was a stablemate of Tonalist who was to win the Belmont Stakes, Gr.1 and thwart California Chrome's Triple Crown bid. Over the next two years, Speaking of Which was sparingly raced, coming under the silks just nine times. He won three of those starts including the Monmouth Stakes, Gr.2 at Oceanport, New Jersey and Tropical Turf Handicap, Gr.3 at Gulfstream Park in his home state. His other win was also gained at Oceanport in an allowance race while his third in the Colonel E.R. Bradley Stakes, Gr.3 came at Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

In all, five wins at 3, 4 and 5 (from 1700 m. to 2000 m.) and four places from 15 starts earned the owners GBP 206,928. All his wins in U.S.A. were over turf. His best official rating in Ireland was 116 as a 3 year old.

Speaking of Which will be the first son of Invincible Spirit to stand at stud in India. Invincible Spirit was a smart sprinter winning all his six races at 1200 m. including the Stanley Leisure Sprint Cup, Gr.1 at Haydock Park. He was retired to Irish National Stud in 2003 for a covering fee of 10,000 euros. So successful and popular has he been as a stallion that his 2015 covering fee is 100,000 euros. Though a sprinter himself, he has had several good horses who stayed much further. His best progeny includes Lawman (Prix du Jockey Club - Mitsubishi Motors, Gr.1; sire), Kingman (Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas, Gr.1; retires to stud in 2015), Charm Spirit (Prix Jean Prat, Gr.1; retires to stud in 2015), Moonlight Cloud (Qatar Prix de la Foret, Gr.1), Mayson (Darley July Cup, Gr. 1; sire), Rosdhu Queen (Jaguar Cars Cheveley Park Stakes, Gr.1), Yosei (Inglis Sires' Produce Stakes, Gr.1), Hooray (Adnams Cheveley Park Stakes, Gr.1), Vale of York (Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Gr.1; sire), I Am Invincible (Champion Freshman Sire in Australia 2013-14), Zebedee (sire), Captain Marvelous (sire), Born to Sea (sire) and many others.

Suitably Discreet, the dam of Speaking of Which, did not race. Her dam Alywow (by Alysheba) was the Horse of the Year in Canada in 1994. The next dam Triple Wow (by Coastal) won 14 of her 42 starts including the Selene Stakes, Gr.2. The next two damsires are Sir Ivor and Khaled's son Hillary. Further line is Argentinian and goes back to the great mare Bambuca. Bambuca was bred by Senor Martinez de Hoz's Haras Chapadmalal. That stud farm on Mar del Plata coast was then at its height. Bambuca was an excellent race mare and an even better producer. The family recently had the Premio Parioli, Gr.3 (Italian 2000 Guineas) winner Malossol.

The stallion is bred on the Invincible Spirit/Mr. Prospector cross. This cross has done well with likes of Lawman, Hooray, Conquest, Born to Sea and Our Jonathan to commend it. An attractive dark bay, Speaking of Which stands 16.1 hands tall, has good bone and an equable temperament.

Speaking of Which will become the eighth imported stallion to hold court at Usha Stud. Grey Gaston, Common Land, Treasure Leaf, Razeen, Steinbeck, China Visit and Multidimensional are the previous 'Magnificent Seven'. That is a formidable list and the newcomer has a formidable yardstick by which he will be measured.
