Foundation of Usha Culture

Foundation of Usha Culture

“The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact
with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit, & fire.”

Sharon Ralls Lemon
Major P. K. Mehra with foals

The culture of Usha is derived from its Indian ethos which holds all creation in reverence. Its very name is like a mantra (a seed word) that evokes the potential that Usha is capable of manifesting.

In Indian mythology, Usha, the goddess Dawn, is the bearer of Light, and Ashwa, the Horse is her Force, her Energy. Usha brings to life that which was asleep, reveals that which was hidden to the eye.

At Usha, the three golden principles of true rearing are:

  • Only that can be trained in the horse which already lies concealed in him. Breeding is the art of bringing forth that hidden truth, the unique potential.
  • Instinct and intuition are invaluable in breeding. It’s the master’s eye that attunes itself to the horses needs and responds to all that is silently revealed.
  • The dream is to go to a far horizon, and the beginning is made with the foal… leading it gently, step by step, from what it is today to what it will be. At Usha, we always keep this future becoming of each foal in our hearts as we pay attention to small details of daily routine.

To be at the Usha Stud is to be surrounded by the proud and noble class of Rajputs, the grooms who trace their lineage to the royal warrior class of Western India – steeped in a culture of love and respect for the horse. The Ashwa is to them like a God and the care that they bestow upon it goes beyond mere physical nurturing. They do not merely feed the horse, they nurture it; they do not just rub it down, they revere it; they do not hold the horse, they accompany it as they walk with it in the paddocks. And the horses too can feel the difference and respond to the personal touch and care.
